Mountains 1:
The majestic hills and oak savannah of
Malibu Creek State Park have served as the
backdrop for filming many early western
movies and became familiar to us as the
hills surrounding M*A*S*H. Today, visitors
enjoy exploring the rolling hills, Malibu
Creek, Hiking trails and nature viewing
among the Santa Monica Mountains.

Mountains 2:
Where chaparral gives way to grasslands,
meadows and open savannah, the area's mild
and wet winters often set the stage for
beautiful displays of native wildflowers,
March to May. California Poppies are
captured here dancing in the breeze. Others
to look for include the Sticky Monkey
Flower, Purple Sage, Bush Lupine, Mustard,
California Lilac, Yucca, Bush Sunflower and
Mariposa Lily.

Mountains 3:
An abundance of water in the Santa
Monica Mountains sustains more than 50
species of mammals including deer, bobcats,
coyote, and mountain lions. The cries of
red-tailed hawks, woodpeckers and great
horned owls echo in the canyons, along with
hundreds of other bird species. These
headwaters of Zuma Creek typify the riparian
woodlands found in canyons throughout the
mountain range. |

Mountains 4:
While coastal sage scrub and dense
chaparral are more common, the Santa Monica
Mountains National Recreation Area and CA
State Parks also contain quiet oak woodlands
for peaceful reflection. Here a woodland
trail leads to places unknown and new vistas
near Nicholas Flat in Leo Carrillo State
Park.
